Why do you do it?  Singing in a choir is not only about singing, it is about travel, comradeship, education, magic moments, the tingle factor, fame, achievement, disappointment, charity work and a whole lot more.
Where do you sing? The choir has sung in France where we represented Wigan, and other parts of Europe, in 2009 we sang in the Royal Albert Hall and all over England and Wales.
What do you get out of it? There is nothing like the bond that springs up among choristers. You are proud of your section and proud of your choir, all working together, because it will not work otherwise.
Is it educational? The learning process never ends. You learn to read music without knowing it. You learn foreign tongues without realising it. Your brain is sharper, your memory improves because you want to shine among your peers.
Do you sing for charities?  Every year the choir raises thousands of pounds for charities nation wide. We have raised thousands of pounds for local organisations and churches. At our 40th Anniversary we raised over £300 that was donated to three local charities.
What are we?  A male voice choir from Lancashire with all the emotion that that evokes. Although the majority of the men are not miners any more, their hearts and minds are dedicated to keeping the memory of Parkside Colliery alive, particularly the music tradition.
Who are we?  Ordinary men, from all age groups, from all walks of life, from anywhere and everywhere. Some of the choristers live on the doorstep, some just around the corner and quite a few travel some distance to be at rehearsal. It's all about wanting to be part of the action.
What do we do? Rehearse every week, perform at least one concert per month, travel all over the country, entertain with other choirs, sing with great artistes, travel abroad and have tremendous fun while doing it.
Why Parkside Colliery Choir?  You may think that to belong to a good choir you would have to have singing experience, a good voice and some musical knowledge. This may be true of many choirs, but at Parkside we do not pick and choose our choristers to that extent. If you want to sing and you can prove your commitment, we would love to let you have a go. After all that is how we all started.
I can't read music. You are not on your own, but our methods of learning take this into account. After 40 years experience with every level of knowledge you will not fail to give voice. Ask any of the choristers.
I have heard you singing in Welsh?  We are not a Welsh choir, but we do sing in Welsh, French, Latin and other languages as well as English (and Wiganeese), we are lucky to have a number of Welsh speakers in the choir to teach us. We have sung in Welsh in Wales and in French in France and have been very well received, there are many families in the area with strong Welsh connections and we receive many requests to include Welsh songs in our concerts.
What is involved?  A simple test to ascertain the voice range, then regular attendance at rehearsal to learn the current repertoire. You pay an annual subscription once the probation period is successfully covered.
Can my family be involved? We try our best to include family and friends in all our trips both home and abroad. There is a great social side to all our activities.
What do I do now?   Talk to the Secretary, any choir member or why not pop in to a rehearsal one night, you will be made most welcome to just observe if you want.
Where do you meet? We meet at 7-30pm every Monday evening in the large hall at Ashton-in-Makerfield Congregational Church in Hilton Street, (just off Bolton Road, next to the YMCA and telephone exchange)
Do you have a ladies section? We have a ladies support group, but we do not have a ladies choir at the the present time, but some of the ladies sing with local community choirs
COME AND ENJOY SINGING WITH US Singing has a range of mental, social and physical benefits. Check out our top reasons to get singing:
MEET NEW PEOPLE Choirs are a great way to meet people and make new friends in your community.
GOOD FOR YOUR HEART Singing is a fun aerobic exercise that gives both your heart and lungs a fantastic workout.
MAKES YOU HAPPY When you sing your body produces feel-good hormones called endorphins.
LOOK GOOD Singing makes you look good! It improves posture, tones your tummy and exercises facial muscles.
HEALTH Using your diaphragm to sing is a good way to promote a healthy lymphatic system, which in turn promotes a healthy immune system.
CONFIDENCE Joining a choir is a great way to learn new skills, improve self-esteem and build confidence.
RELAX The deep breathing required when singing reduces anxiety and can help you to relax.
STOP SNORING! Singing improves the muscle tone in the larynx which helps to calm snoring and improve sleeping.
